These are the questions I asked Nextel Cup driver Jimmie Johnson during a national telephone news conference on Tuesday:
IN ADDITION TO YOURSELF, WHO ARE THE TOP 4 DRIVERS WHO UNDERSTAND DRAFTING?
"Thank you. The No. 8 (Dale Earnhardt Jr.), the No. 24 (Jeff Gordon), the No. 20 (Tony Stewart) and……I've got a long list. More than four."
OKAY, GIVE ME THE TOP 10
"Okay I would say the No. 2 (Kurt Busch), Elliott Sadler is very smart with it as well. Michael is very, very good with the drafting. McMurray does a great job in the draft. He's always up there in the draft."
ARE THERE GUYS WHO ARE REALLY GOOD AT DRAFTING, BUT ON ANY OTHER WEEKEND YOU DON'T GIVE THEM MUCH THOUGHT?
"Oh definitely. The plate racing is a different type of racing. There are guys who really specialize in it and maximize the four opportunities a year they get. It doesn't make me look at them any differently as a driver; we all have our strong points and strong tracks. There are certain guys that come to the plate race and you know you're going to have to deal with them for the win."
WHEN YOU WON THE DAYTONA 500 THIS YEAR, DID YOU REGARD THAT AS A MAJOR ACHIEVEMENT?"Oh, without a doubt. It had been on my goal sheet for a while to win a plate race. It's so tough. When I look back at the 500, there are so many different things that could have gone on (like) help from a different car and being in the right lane. There are so many variables out of your control that you can't do anything about. I've been second or third on the last lap numerous times and come back around and finish fifth or seventh because I've made the wrong me. At the 500, everything came together. There were some smart decisions on my part, but a lot of racing luck and a lot of decisions made by other guys around me cycled me to the front at the right time and I got the win. I know I had a great car and I did a great job and everything worked itself out, but there are no guarantees that if you have the best driver and the best car that you're going to win that race."
